Hfour worked with Match Marketing Group to create an engaging experience for the attendees of Escapade Music Festival in Ottawa, Ontario. Two towers were covered on three sides by audio reactive LED tetrahedrons which were controlled by microphones. Attendees could speak into them with their friends and others would see their voices encoded into light art from around the festival. The towers also provided VIP viewing for a lucky crowd of people.
Match Marketing Group originally approached Hfour after having discovered some of our past works on social media. After learning the details of the anticipated outcome at the event, we researched what type of interaction design and sculptural aesthetic would best suit an experiential event for the target demographic. A wrap around geometric form constructed of translucent plastic was determined to be the best balance between design, impact, and available resources. Additionally, triangles are cool, and even cooler when tessellated to also make hexagons.
A key part of the interaction component was that immediate reactivity was the best method to engage audiences without barriers. Complicated user interaction and delays were avoided at all costs. A microphone provided a great place for energetic audience members to make their voices seen with led lights, and connect with the brand experience in an accessible way.
The robust system withstood both wild festival-goers as well as a fair amount of rain. As a testament to the system’s ability to withstand the elements, we keep a special light fixture from this installation in our office. Shaking it reveals that it’s full of water; plug it in and it still lights up.
