Each year, during the brief time when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, Hfour partners with the Vancouver Cherry Blossom festival to create an unique experience. In April 2014, nearly one thousand people gathered in Sunset Beach Park to witness Sakura Illuminations. Differing from the previous year, the installation and event occurred at only one site, instead of 11 in 2013. This caused a single large turnout of an audience who would have to wait until 2015 to catch the next installation and performance.
Projecting on trees and performers
Custom designed lanterns with reactive LED lights were hung in the trees and projectors were set up to illuminate the blossoms and the performing artists. In 2014, Hfour collaborated with LED augmented dancers to embody the fleeting beauty of the cherry blossoms. When facing the audience, their custom designed costumes were illuminated with projections; when turned away, the dark side of their costume caused them to nearly disappear.
This installation and performance was made possible by Canadian Heritage and the City of Vancouver.
