Hfour was invited to make an airline brand experience piece of motion graphics/video art for the event which marked the first anniversary of China Eastern Airlines’ flights to Toronto. The event also celebrated the announcement of a daily service.
We decided to make a piece which celebrates the features of both cities, the interconnectivity of the world; as well as reflects the aesthetic qualities of the land of the midnight sun under the flight path. Depending on the season, both the aurora and the early sunrise can be seen simultaneously, creating a unique and colourful, transpolar experience. Contemporary design styles were combined with custom animated brand assets to create a single brand experience video. Due to limitations of time and budget, no real video was used in the creation of this piece, it was made exclusively with 3D and 2D animation and motion graphics.
Original plans included projection mapping on large purpose-designed sculptural forms, but as the event production and planning progressed, the venue changed and it was discovered that there was insufficient space in the new room to fit all the guests as well as the sculpture. The video was originally presented on two projection screens on either side of a stage. Colours from the video were used to control the DMX lighting system, using a non-traditional video-as-control DMX control interface. This feature at the event to linked the atmospheric qualities of the video to the physical experience of the room. The online version shows both left and right sides together as a single video.
Also at the event was an illuminated shadows system featuring key brand messaging and integrated images.
